“I too would like to add to Brandice’s nomination of Janine. I am his mother, and as a parent whose child is just diagnosed with leukemia it is a very scary time. Still is. Every nurse was exemplary in some way, but Janine won a place in our hearts forever. Brandice is a child that up until now had never been sick. He never had to stay more than a day at the hospital—after his diagnosis we stayed 25 straight days before having to return due to dehydration. Janine was so understanding of his temper (steroid), his exhaustion, his fears, his pain, his worry and sorrow of being 10 years old and not understanding. She swooped in and where he had temper she had calm reasoning; when he had fears, she had compassion; when he had questions, Janine had answers that satisfied my little boy; and when he had pain, depression and worry, she had compassion, nurturing spirit, love for her profession and a little for B.J. too, that she soothed away some of the rough edges of his induction treat-ment. Cancer is never a good thing, but with nurses like Janine, Megan, and well all OHSCU 7th floor, it made the fight seem more hopeful than hopeless.
