When she walked into my room the following day, I immediately cried, feeling connected to her through something so sacred and traumatic.
I went to YRMC to deliver my first baby with fear and uncertainty, but that's where I was met with confidence and tenderness. I was introduced to Janis not long after our arrival at the hospital, where she was on shift for the majority of my labor. She was there with me, hugging me through the anxiety I had during an epidural. This was one of my biggest fears with labor and delivery, but I knew I wanted to get the epidural, and I made sure she knew my birth plan. She told me I could do it, and I truly only followed through because of her encouragement. The anesthesiologist turned on meditation music, and we all took a few minutes to meditate and find our centers before proceeding.

After the epidural, Janis was there until I delivered my baby through a very traumatic birth. She was so good to me and when she returned the following day for another shift, she was quick to ensure I was okay emotionally and physically. When she walked into my room the following day, I immediately cried, feeling connected to her through something so sacred and traumatic. My baby was born after having shoulder dystocia, and we had some postpartum complications. She gave my baby boy his first bath and was so thoughtful with every step she took. Making sure to involve me as much as she could. She will always hold a special place in my heart as she genuinely cared about my health and safety as well as my baby boy.

I can't think of a nurse more deserving of the DAISY Award. Janis showed YRMC's core values through her kindness and created a meaningful human connection. "Our values are the driving force for how we live and interact with our patients and peers."

"We create human connections by being more than just nice”.

She is a wonderful nurse who is undoubtedly in the right field of work. Thank you, Janis, and all the wonderful L&D staff that saved my and my baby's lives.
