She took the time to listen to her concerns and answered questions within her scope. That alone helped my mother tremendously. My mom’s countenance changed and so did mine.
My mother was diagnosed with cancer last year and it metastasized a year later requiring a second surgery at a hospital north of TRMC. One week later, following the second surgery, we were both exhausted. It was a day that was not the best with nursing staff and I was at my wits end advocating to the best of my ability.

Leigh popped up that day just as I was close to having a meltdown. Literally, unplanned and out of the blue. I know it was truly God that sent Leigh and another member of our Tift Regional Family. Leigh came right in, met my family, made herself at home, and instantly started talking to my mother. She took the time to listen to her concerns and answered questions within her scope. That alone helped my mother tremendously. My mom’s countenance changed and so did mine.

My mom had a particular machine that would not stop beeping. Leigh was able to get it fixed, of course, while we kept guard at the door. She was the only nurse that day that was able to stop it. She also helped to secure another piece of equipment to the floor after talking to the nursing staff. She did this in a way that was not pretentious or condescending. She didn’t let on to anyone from the staff at that hospital that she was a nurse.

My mother and I are forever grateful that Leigh came to the rescue for us as an advocate, comforter, and most importantly a compassionate nurse. My mother is still in the fight of dealing with cancer and is at ease because she knows she has her own personal nurse in Leigh. Leigh exhibited selfless determination which showed her compassion and dedication to the field of nursing. She was not on any payroll. She saw needs that she could meet and met them. This alone makes her a DAISY Nurse.

But there is more! One of Leigh’s co-workers had a son requiring a serious surgery at a tertiary center. As you can imagine, staying out of town with a sick child is taxing on resources, mentally, physically, and financially but this employee had a guardian angel in Leigh Luke. Leigh assisted in driving the employee and her son to appointments and rallied other staff to help provide food, a refrigerator, and air conditioning for their home which lifted a huge burden from the co-worker’s shoulders and allowed her to give her child her undivided attention.
