We have all been there, you walk into your shift and someone says, "Good luck with that one. He is such a grump." Jared Restivo decided that he was not going to let the previous shift nurse influence his attitude toward this patient. He decided that if the patient was going to give it to him, then he was going to give it right back. So that is exactly what he did and it worked! the nurse and the patient developed an ongoing friendship.
Jared cared for the patient many times while working the night shift on 4 East. Their relationship continued when Jared was transferred to the Emergency Department. He would often go up to East 4 to visit the patient and even visited the patient at his home. The patient became increasingly ill with each admission to the hospital but Jared maintained a bond with this patient and his family in a way that only few can. When the patient passed away, the patient's family honored Jared by having him as a pall bearer at the patient's funeral.
Jared Restivo defined compassion with his actions.
