Jarrod handled this with calmness and professionalism, and yet he was truly empathetic and tried hard to provide my brother with some sense of dignity.
It is with heartfelt gratitude and complete admiration that I nominate Jarrod for a Daisy Award. While every nurse on the Parkview Tower, 11th floor Oncology staff was dedicated and caring, Jarrod was exceptional in his devotion to his caregiving and determination to make every day of my brother’s life count.
My brother spent a month and a half in the care of the nurses and doctors on the 11th floor. K had endured 6 years of clinical trials due to throat cancer. He developed shingles while in an assisted living home and was in such extreme pain that he was admitted to Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
From the first days after my brother was admitted, Jarrod was his nurse, and Jarrod established a rapport with him, engaging in conversation about sports. Everyday Jarrod was on duty, he constantly evaluated my brother’s pain, and K trusted what Jarrod had to say about his medical treatments.
As the weeks went on, I was so grateful for the days or nights that Jarrod was there. His attention to, and patience with, my brother was so reassuring to me. Eventually, pain and medication overwhelmed my brother, and he became agitated and sometimes violent, to the point of being repeatedly restrained. Between Security Guards being called, and efforts made to ensure staff safety, my brother caused his share of chaos on the floor! Jarrod handled this with calmness and professionalism, and yet he was truly empathetic and tried hard to provide him with some sense of dignity. His calming effect on my brother was obvious, and even when heavily medicated, my brother responded best to Jarrod (whom he called "Doc.") Jarrod used all of his training and persistence to get my brother to eat and to continue taking his meds, and in the toughest of moments he never lost patience. Throughout my brother’s delusions and semi-consciousness, Jarrod displayed understanding and tremendous kindness. He made a "dinner date" where he would stay with him through dinner, and he bathed him and even gave him a shave or two.
Jarrod also understood my feelings of helplessness and sadness. He gave me daily reports on his condition and meds, and kindly helped me face the reality of what was to come. Even when my brother was in Hospice in his room, Jarrod continued to check on him frequently and provide whatever comfort was allowable.
Nowhere in the world could I have found better and more attentive care than at Barnes, and it was due to the nurses, doctors, and staff. Jarrod exemplifies the very best of Barnes’ medical, physical, mental, and empathetic care of those who need it the most.
Please accept my nomination of Jarrod Delp as one of the very best RNs in your hospital and certainly the best I could have hoped to care for my brother.
