My husband was rushed to Henderson Hospital – in cardiac arrest due to a lack of oxygen. When he arrived at the emergency room this Sunday in May, the nurses worked diligently to keep him alive. However, he passed away 3 days later, in your ICU.

His nurse in ICU, Jasmine, rekindled my confidence in your hospital after a past experience. She attended to his needs during the day and kept me informed of his condition every step of the way. I had to make the most difficult decision of my life – should I turn off his life support. I knew L would not want to live with machines keeping him alive and we had talked about it often. Jasmine explained what would happen, that my L would be made comfortable using medication to make sure he wasn’t in any pain during the process. She explained how the tubes would be removed and he might stay alive for a few hours, including more choices to make if that happened.

After consulting with L’s best friend, we concurred my L would not want to live on life support. I made the decision that would be in my husband’s best interests and let him peacefully pass away. The equipment was removed at 4:40 pm. I held his hand and cried. My life of 54 ½ years was leaving me. Jasmine asked if I liked music, and I told her I did. She sang very softly – “Lift Me Up” (I believe that is the name of the hymn.) At 4:50 pm L was declared dead, and Jasmine remained with me the whole time even though she had other patients. Jasmine’s compassion is beyond reproach. She treated L as an honor, not a chore. Jasmine is a true DAISY Nurse.
