Jason was my nurse and took excellent care of me.
I was a patient at MD Anderson who underwent surgery for breast cancer. My case was late in the day and as a result, I was kept overnight for monitoring. Jason was my nurse and took excellent care of me. He was quick to respond if I called out. He kept me and my family informed. He was proactive and stayed on top of managing my pain. He promoted activity and prevention of DVT formation. He was also teaching other healthcare workers and explaining things in a way that was meaningful to them and also to the patient. I have been a nurse for over 20 years and have been taken care of in a hospital setting as a patient before, but my experience was much different. Before I felt like I needed to stay awake and engaged in my treatment for fear someone would miss something, or I would be hurt due to inexperience or inadequate staffing to care for me. This was not the case for me at MD Anderson in general, but knowing I was on a nursing unit where balancing patient acuity, the ratio of nurses to patients, teaching new healthcare workers and students, etc. is a challenge and maybe the reality - it was not something I experienced or was afraid of as a patient. Instead, I was able to be a patient and place my trust in healthcare providers, like Jason, whom I entrusted my life with. This was such a relief!
