I received a patient from Jovanna status post-cardiac arrest. I was told by RT, another RN who attended the code, and Jovanna that she had an intuition about this patient that an event was about to happen.
Not only intuition but good assessment led this RN to stay with the patient. Jovanna was able to witness the patient go into vfib and immediately called for help and sprang into action according to those who were there. The evidence of her quick action is when the patient got ROSC and was awake and following commands an hour after his heart stopped. This amazing RN, Jovanna, has impeccable assessment and quick-thinking skills, never left the patient's side, was a member of the "smoothest run code witnessed on a "floor Unit," and checked back in ICU a couple of hours later to see how the patient was doing. I consider this the highest quality nursing any RN could give a patient and the reason this patient is alive and will be discharged home in a few days.
