He told me that they would take care of mum and I needed to concentrate on taking care of myself and being strong. I felt safe and assured that no matter what was going to come in the following days that the team in ICU would make it all ok.
My mother is currently a patient in ICU at St Mary’s Hospital. One evening, when Jay was the nurse in charge of my mother’s care, I received the worst news from a consultant that a family member could receive. End-of-life care was going to be started for my mother. As the consultant delivered these words, my heart shattered, and my mind spiraled. I was on my own with my partner and family in another country. Jay came over and sat with me and showed me such immense kindness and compassion, and I will never forget it. He answered all my difficult questions with gentleness and honesty and he put my mind at ease. He told me that they would take care of mum and I needed to concentrate on taking care of myself and being strong. I felt safe and assured that no matter what was going to come in the following days that the team in ICU would make it all ok. Whilst my mother has been in ICU, every nurse and doctor in charge of my mother has treated her with compassion and respect. On that evening, Jay not only took care of my mum with such kindness, but he also showed gentleness and support to me, and he has continued to do so whenever I have met him in the ICU. I will always think of the way he supported me at my darkest hour and I hope he is recognised for his exceptional work in ICU.
