It is with both pleasure and deep gratitude that I write this recommendation for nurse Jay Watt, who provided extraordinary care during my three-day stay at Mount Sinai Miami Beach facility on 6 Blum. I was admitted from the emergency room with a bleeding ulcer, and during a time of vulnerability and uncertainty, Jay’s compassion, skill, and attentiveness made all the difference.

As an African-American woman, I have not always experienced equitable or responsive care in medical settings. However, Jay consistently demonstrated respect, empathy, and professionalism in every interaction. His care stood out in the following ways:

  1. Encouragement and support: On my first day, I was weak, disoriented, and barely able to move from my bed. Jay gently encouraged me to engage in small acts of self-care, lifting my spirits with his upbeat demeanor and helping me regain my confidence in my own strength.
  2. Clear communication and reassurance: I was anxious about what would happen next, but Jay patiently explained each step of my treatment plan. His clarity and kindness helped me relax and trust the process. He also connected warmly with my partner, who likewise remarked on Jay’s excellent care and professionalism.
  3. Compassion during procedure: On the day of my endoscopy, Jay ensured I was fully prepared and treated with dignity. When the hospital gowns proved difficult to manage, he was attentive and made sure I remained comfortable and always covered.
  4. Advocacy and follow-through: After my procedure, I believed I would be discharged, but the orders had not been transferred from surgery back to the unit. Jay listened to my concerns and promptly contacted the doctor on my behalf. His advocacy eased my anxiety and ensured I was well-informed.
  5. Continued concern beyond his assignment: The following morning, even though he was not assigned to me, Jay came by first thing to check whether I had been discharged. Simply seeing him lifted my spirits. I trusted that he would do whatever he could to resolve my remaining issues.
  6. Exceptional dedication during discharge: When my ride had arrived but no one had come to discharge me, Jay once again stepped in. Although he was not my assigned nurse and my primary nurse had not performed a discharge before, Jay completed the process himself. He reviewed every detail of the paperwork with me, including upcoming appointments noted in my chart, information I might have overlooked without his thorough guidance.

Jay is a seasoned, empathetic, competent, and personable nurse whose dedication reflects the highest standards of patient care. He truly embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award and highly deserves this recognition.
