Jayme was the postpartum nurse who took care of my patient. It was not an easy assignment; the patient was scheduled to deliver at a different hospital in a few days for and induction of labor. However, suddenly in the middle of the night, just a few days before her scheduled induction, that she had severe abdominal pain and when she presented to the nearest Hospital, Silver Cross, she was found to have a massive placental abruption and a 36-week IUFD. Suddenly the hope and joy of this patient turned into an impossible situation needing urgent cesarean section and blood transfusions.
Fortunately, the hospital staff performed extraordinarily in the face of this emergency. From a surgical standpoint, the patient did very well, but emotionally the patient was having difficulty being able to interact with her family or being able to participate in the grieving process at the sudden loss of her baby boy. It was not until the patient was transferred to Mother Baby and Nurse Jayme that the patient and her husband were able to start along the path of healing.
The patient was seen by Psych and given resources, and everyone was caring and empathetic, but it was Nurse Jayme that was truly the light in this time of darkness. Overall, Nurse Jayme is a fun and outgoing nurse who loves caring for her patients, but it was this patient at this time that she was able to rise to a new level. She not only provided exemplary nursing care for the patient physically, but she was able to connect and heal her emotionally and spiritually. She helped the family hold their son during his first bath. Nurse Jayme guided them to keep a lock of their son's hair.
However, the most amazing thing was that because of Jayme's caring and compassion, the patient was able to hold her baby boy. It was such an important event that it brought tears to the eyes of everyone in the room. Jayme's professionalism as she give explanations of processes of the baby's first bath really made an impact on this patient. Nurse Jayme made their son look so peaceful that it appeared as though he was just sleeping quietly, such an important aspect that cannot be overstated. The family along with nurse Jayme were even able to embrace in a hug and several tears as they moved through the process of dealing with funeral home. Nurses are usually expected to be the ones who provide compassion and care through their treatment and that was made evident by the way that Jayme truly cared for her this patient and her family.
I have no doubt that this experience, while a true tragedy, was softened by the way nurse Jayme Sala kept the room clean and safe so that they could focus on their baby, always was professional but approachable, kept the family focused on the details of their present situation, and making sure to spend as much time as they needed with their son. Overall, it was how she was able to connect to this family and support them. An inspiration for sure. Jayme is a true DAISY Nurse.
