I am nominating Jazmin Morales for the DAISY Award. My husband is dealing with a cancer diagnosis, and out of all the nurses he has had (which have been many), he describes Jazmin as "the best."
Jazmin demonstrates confidence and impresses you with her knowledge, problem-solving, and skill. She exudes a warm and positive energy. She presents information in a clear, concise manner, but more importantly for us, she did not embellish her responses with the dire statistics that we are well aware of. We have found that often when presenting stressful information, some nurses express it in such a way that it increases patient and family anxiety. Jazmin is not one of those nurses. She has a style that educates without being alarming. She deals with every blip along the way in a calm and reassuring manner.
She saw my husband as a person with cancer, not as a cancer patient. They had many dialogues where she exhibited a genuine interest in his life. She shared with us some of her personal stories. This type of social interaction humanizes the hospital experience. Her sense of humor always lightened up the day. As embarrassing as some care was for my husband, Jazmin handled these situations with respect and a matter of fact approach, like they were no big deal.
She not only took care of my husband, but she anticipated my needs, as well. The little things mean so much like charging our Kindles because I forgot the chargers, water always cold and fresh, warm blankets, frequently checking in without being intrusive, and a warm smile. Jazmin taught me how to care for my husband's central line, and she did it with patience and positive support. She provided easy to understand instruction in a non-intimidating matter. She also provided me with multiple opportunities to practice under her guidance. I feel very confident to go home and implement his care safely.
I could go on and on about Jazmin. I can't tell you what a difference she made and how very fortunate we were to have her caring for us and making the overwhelming and frightening experience much less daunting and horrific. We had the best emotional and physical support. She is a nurse in every sense of the word. It is our hope that she will be recognized for the exceptional work she does with patients. Clone her is my advice!
