Jean has been an excellent research and faculty mentor and role model to me.
Jean has long been a respectable faculty member in the School of Nursing (SON) community and has successfully mentored many students and junior faculty across the nursing programs over the past 16 years. She is a Professor at the SON, Cora Meidl Siehl Chair in Nursing Research, and Director, Minnesota Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence. Jean is a well-accomplished researcher, effective educator, and an excellent mentor. I am well-acquainted with Jean, having her initially as my dissertation and postdoctoral advisor, and now as my colleague when I have joined the faculty team. She is currently my mentor in two different programs: Mature Women’s Health Scholar Award through the Deborah E. Powell Women’s Health Center, and Young Investigators Initiative Grant Mentoring and Career Development Program.

Jean has been an excellent research and faculty mentor and role model to me. She always encourages me to push myself and get out of my comfort zone. I am very grateful to have a mentor who knows my potentials and gives me the tools and confidence that I need to achieve my goals. Jean’s passion for nurturing students and junior faculty members in the field of Gerontological nursing is well-known within the SON. Her influence on students reaches far beyond the SON. She provides mentorship and guidance locally, nationally, and internationally through many nursing education and leadership programs. For example, the Facilitated Learning to Advance Geriatric Nursing program that she directed and co-developed. Jean continues to inspire many of us to be outstanding gerontological nursing educators, researchers, and leaders.

In summary, Jean has met or exceeded many of the requirements to receive this award. She has a strong legacy of excellence in mentoring and in demonstrating full commitment to the nursing profession as a leader and a great role model to many students and junior faculty. The Exceptional Mentorship Award fits well with Jean’s passion and contributions.
