Jeanette’s extensive experience in emergency, trauma, critical care, behavioral health, and service line development underscores her reputation as an innovative, transformational leader. Her mentorship has built a resilient and forward-thinking nursing team, leaving an enduring legacy.
It is my privilege to nominate Jeanette Abundis, MSN, RN, CNS, Senior Director of Emergency and Critical Care Services at PIH Health Whittier Hospital, for the DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award. With a remarkable 43-year nursing career, Jeanette has served as a pivotal member of the PIH family since 2016, bringing unmatched dedication, mentorship, and advocacy for nursing excellence across all three campuses. Her deep commitment to advancing nursing practice and patient care has made a profound impact on our organization.
Jeanette exemplifies the heart of a nurse advocate. She continually reminds leadership to consider “the nurse behind the decisions,” ensuring that every choice reflects compassion and understanding of the challenges faced by frontline staff. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when PPE shortages left many in dire circumstances, Jeanette’s dedication stood out. While others resorted to wearing trash bags, Jeanette took action. She set up an assembly line at home, enlisting her family to create face shields for staff. She stood shoulder-to-shoulder with her team during huddles, offering words of encouragement and acknowledging the harsh realities they faced with empathy and solidarity.
Jeanette also goes above and beyond her role as a leader. One standout example of her dedication is her mentorship of a hospital volunteer. She not only assisted the volunteer with college applications but also guided them in securing scholarships to fund their education. Thanks to Jeanette’s unwavering support and guidance, this volunteer is now in their first year of nursing school, inspired by her example and leadership. Additionally, Jeanette regularly meets with nursing students completing clinical rotations within the hospital. She takes the time to check in with them, ensuring they have a positive learning experience and offering valuable guidance as they prepare to enter the nursing profession.
In addition to her remarkable clinical leadership, Jeanette is the heart behind PIH’s “Kindness Cart” initiative. Thoughtfully stocked with snacks, small treats, and useful items, the cart is a beloved morale booster. Its arrival brings smiles across the units, and Jeanette ensures it remains festive, practical, and uplifting.
Her influence extends to spearheading organizational initiatives such as disaster response at Good Samaritan and Downey campuses, always partnering with departments to ensure the highest standards of care. Her relentless commitment to patient outcomes earned her recognition as one of the Los Angeles Business Journal’s 2024 Women of Influence in Healthcare.
