Jeannie started making calls, and after several hours was able to make arrangements that allowed the patient to have the emergency surgery without jeopardizing his naturalization process.
Jeannie Labat Butler was caring for a patient with an injury to his foot, the patient was in need of emergency surgery. However, the patient was insisting on signing out against medical advice, stating he could return in two days. After a few conversations, Jeannie discovered the reason the patient was insisting to leave. After a year of waiting the patient was scheduled to become a US citizen, his naturalization ceremony was the next day, and he knew it was an appointment he could not miss. Jeannie started making calls, and after several hours was able to make arrangements that allowed the patient to have the emergency surgery without jeopardizing his naturalization process.

Since the first nomination story, Jeannie has shown herself time and time again to be an absolutely Extraordinary Nurse. She is the epitome of a leader, consistently demonstrates clinical excellence, and establishes a special professional connection with each and every patient and family member she contacts. She has taken this Pandemic on full force with no fear and has been a leader to us all.

The day before we changed our tent process during the first wave of COVID I remember standing out in the hot sun with 24 “tent” patients on the sidewalk needing triage feeling completely overwhelmed and this nurse came up to me and said ... one at a time. We will get through it. And we did. Just one example of her professionalism.
