Jeff took me in a wheelchair outside for about 25 minutes, and we just sat and talked. I feel that that time outside on that beautiful fall day really made a difference in my healing, both physically and mentally.
l It has been nearly 3 years ago that this happened and I still think of what Jeff did for me that day. I have told the story to many others and told them how it lifted my spirits that day. I was admitted for a stem cell transplant and was sent home weeks later. I wasn't feeling well Saturday and had a fever Sunday at home. In the morning and was told to go to the ED. I was admitted to 7th floor. My oxygen level had dropped and was sent to the 6th floor where I was given high flow oxygen. I was in bad shape and they were not sure that I would survive. Wednesday morning I felt better and had my first walk since being admitted. Friday, in the afternoon, around 1:30, Jeff Fine came into my room and asked me if he could do anything for me. I am a farm boy, I replied. I grew up on a farm and still live on a farm, and I love being outside. If there is any way I could go outside for 2 minutes, it would really feel good. Jeff said, I will be back, and when he returned about 1 1/2 hours later, he took me in a wheelchair outside for about 25 minutes, and we just sat and talked. I feel that that time outside on that beautiful fall day really made a difference in my healing, both physically and mentally. For Jeff to take his time with me having all the other things he had to do that day was, I felt, "over the top".
