We had an unfortunate code on a young patient that did not end well. It was very unexpected, and the staff was emotional. Jeff was a source of support from the beginning. He rounded often to make sure the nurses were doing ok because they were visibly upset. In many hospitals I’ve worked, there isn’t much attention paid to the nurse after a code. We are expected to just move on with our day and forget about what happened. The extra support and care for our well-being were much appreciated. The entire day was spent coordinating with the family about the next steps. The patient’s mother was out of state and wouldn’t be at the hospital until the late evening. When she arrived, Jeff removed the deceased from the morgue, brought him up to the floor, and put him in a bed. Instead of allowing this mother to see her son for the last time in a morgue, on a metal table, contained in a bag; Jeff went above and beyond so his mother could say her goodbyes in better setting. The sensitivity and care that Jeff displayed was overwhelming. This is what whole-care nursing is. It speaks volumes about Jeff’s character as a person, nurse, and leader. I’m grateful to be working with nurses like Jeff! It's what makes this place special and sets us apart.
