Jeff is an extraordinary nurse. He is compassionate to his patients and always advocates for them. Many times, I have witnessed how he interacts with patients. He provides care without bias, is always sincere in what he does, and is always available to help. He is always recognized by patients and caregivers for always being there for them. He is kind, generous, and very patient, especially with the more challenging population. When I need someone to help me communicate with a challenging behavioral patient, he is my go-to. He is calm in his approach, which is helpful to patients. As a staff nurse, he is always there for his colleagues, helping them out and protecting them in all manners. Recently, we had a combative and agitated patient who chased one of our female nurses. Jeff didn’t even think twice. He immediately put himself between the staff and the patient to protect his colleague. I was touched by how he showed compassion to his colleague while at the same time providing no judgment to the behavior of the patient. Instead, Jeff looked for more help from the MDs on how we could provide better care and appropriate medications for a patient needing psychiatric help. Jeff has received multiple recognitions from patients’ families. I constantly receive calls from family members letting me know about how much he showed compassion and care for their loved ones. The most recent one was a young teenage patient, depressed and needing a lot of emotional help. I was so touched by how the mother appreciated Jeff’s care. Caring for a sick family member is a lot and having help from a caregiver, and providing emotional support makes a huge difference. This mother submitted her own DAISY nomination for Jeff. I would like to share that with you now. I would like to nominate Jeff McCowan for the DAISY Award. In the last two months both my husband and daughter were patients on Davenport 8. The care they were given while inpatient was wonderful. However, one person in particular, Jeff McCowan, who is one of your nurses, was outstanding. Jeff was caring, compassionate, knowledgeable, and truly went above and beyond when he was assigned as their nurse. My husband and I were so impressed with the care that he gave him during his five-day stay earlier. He also went above and beyond answering questions and concerns that I had, particularly regarding my daughter. My daughter had a stay of over three weeks and suffers from mental health issues. Jeff was so caring and encouraging every day that he worked for both me and my daughter. Words cannot express how thankful I was for the exemplary example he sets every day of what nursing should be.
