Bautista rushed to Dr. S’s to do his best to save the patient.
MC continues to be a beacon of medical excellence and quality. “‘Every patient is considered a VIP’ and that is how I changed my mindset,” shared Nurse Jeff Melandro L. Bautista. Nurse Bautista was assigned to perform Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy, a non-stop dialysis used for patients with kidney failure, to Dr. S where Bautista persevered in explaining to Dr. S and his family why some procedures needed to be accomplished. According to the patient’s family, he exemplified compassionate care and made them feel that Dr. S was not just another patient, but a special person, almost like a father that he felt honored to care for.

Although he ought to take his birthday leave, he did not hesitate to care for the patient, regardless of who he was. A compelling personality shows that Nurse Bautista empathizes with all his patients. He was also meticulous in how he handled and performed the nursing procedures for Dr. S by being careful and ensuring that he is doing the right thing. He was afraid at first to care for the late Chairman Emeritus because he did not want to make a single mistake in giving Dr. S’s treatment and procedures or he might get fired.

He had discomfort at first due to the enormous pressure, but when he saw his patient wearing a smile during the handover, he felt so welcomed. He spent Christmas with Dr. S and his family. Bautista shared that Dr. S was a mentor and that everybody loves him because he is also a humble man who always said thank you. He testified that a simple gesture of gratitude keeps a nurse’s spirit overwhelmed.

His heart rate was dropping, and his breathing was not normal, so Bautista rushed to Dr. S’s to do his best to save the patient. Unfortunately, he did not make it. He wanted to thank his fellow nurses, Resident Doctors and Consultants, various TMC units, and departments during that night, but he was too down to do so, so he took the opportunity to mention and thank them during his speech. He has done a remarkable job in providing care not because it is his job to care for his patients, but because of his genuine and sincere concern for Dr. S’s welfare. His love for his patient was felt so much by the family because he expressed how honored and privileged he was for being one of the Nurses of Dr. S.

“Pain plus reflection equals progress,” an inspirational equation shared by a monk which was reshared by Bautista during his speech at the DAISY Awards. He also revealed that nurses are the unsung heroes of every healthcare facility. A nurse might be underestimated but they are considered the backbone of every treatment in each patient assigned to them.

Being a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit, Bautista has seen his fellow nurses seek finances to make their patients recover. And these nurses’ goal is to never see their patients return to the facility again, but instead meet them outside the hospital walking with no assistance and smiling like a newborn child—an example that their love for their patients is remarkable. Bautista treats his patients like his parents or like his siblings, depending on his patients’ age so that the patients know that someone understands their condition.

“Nurses are Determined to seek the patients’ needs so that they can Assert to give them the Filipino nursing, quality care to their assigned patients so that our sense of Integrity would be built along a period of time so that we can share our deepest sincerity to them,” Bautista explained. “The ‘y’ is for You to find out,” he continued. He explained why every person has a “why” it’s because the person asks himself, “Why am I doing this? Am I doing it right or wrong?” As a person finds his purpose in life, he will build a sense of empathy for himself. Bautista also shared that being a nurse is a vocation and they feel pain in their journey so that they can reflect on themselves to improve their daily lives, to continue to make progressive lives to become a DAISY.

“The nurses were able to make a connection and what the world needs especially now, is connection. People are getting disconnected because of so many distractions, wants, and needs that are irrelevant to living a human life. A life that is of importance, of relevance, and memorable,” said TMC President and CEO. Everyone is extraordinary and special in ways one cannot imagine. To be able to break the barriers and join one’s peers are good ways of sparking the connection and life within everyone. This is what nurses do, they maintain, treat, care, and most importantly love their patients and their families to help improve life.
