A young man from Guatemala was admitted to our hospital after a tragic accident. He spoke no English and had no family nor any resources for long-term care provisions. Consuela Rice, Director of Case Management, and her husband, Jeff Rice, Infection Preventionist, went beyond the call of duty caring for this young man, helping him transition from our hospital to rehab and ultimately home to his family. Due to their patience, compassion, and determination, the couple managed to find several ways to overcome language barriers and build trust with this sick, scared young man. They arranged charity care at a local inpatient rehab facility and made regular visits to him in their off time. The couple worked with the Guatemalan consulate/embassy and the manager of TSA at Huntsville International Airport to get the young man on a flight home to his family after rehab. Consuela and Jeff both went above and beyond their responsibilities to help this young man. We are blessed to have such caring people in our healthcare organization!
