Jeffery is the Charge Nurse on Peace 4. He always advocates for his patients' needs and the staff as well. In this particular case, we had a patient who had temporary guardianship in place with her daughter as the guardian. The patient had been brought in for suicidal ideation. The patient was distraught and tearful. She said she just wanted to be heard and listened to as she felt her rights were being taken away from her, so she told her husband she had taken all her pills. She did not take the medications, and it was simply a cry for help. While in the hospital, the patient was alert and oriented. She would get upset when her family visited and when some of the physicians came by, because each time one of them came to the unit, they were telling her she was going to be locked in a memory care unit. The patient did not feel this was in her best interest. Jeff consulted ethics to evaluate the situation and try to make sure the patients’ best interests were being served. The patient had a hearing scheduled with the Lubbock Court system to determine her capacity and guardianship. The family told the patient it had been cancelled because they did not want her in attendance. They also refused to bring her any clothing. Jeff and the staff felt very strongly that she should at least be able to represent herself if her future was being determined. The court case was not cancelled, and we were able to facilitate a Zoom option for the patient to be able to speak on her behalf. Jeff came in on his day off and brought her a bouquet of flowers to lift her spirits and help her feel supported through the hearing. She stated she had never received flowers before this. She also, for the first time in a long time, felt heard and listened to. Jeff is a very compassionate nurse. He truly is the voice of the poor and vulnerable.
