Jeff established a special connection with this patient and his family. He, to this day, still maintains frequent dialogue and visits with the patient and his family.
Jeffrey Schultz is a colleague, coworker, and friend. Jeff has had a storied career of greater than twenty years. I would love to elaborate on his accomplishments, but I will limit myself by writing on a particular patient encounter that was especially meaningful. I will also do my best to illustrate how great of a teammate Jeff is and how he has become a role model to myself and others on our team.
Jeff is a full-time flight RN where he is one of my coworkers. While working on the helicopter, Jeff was called to transport a pediatric patient with 2nd and 3rd degree burns to greater than 70% of the body. This patient had a critical airway requiring atypical and extraordinary measures to secure the airway. Jeff remained composed and calmed the patient’s family, the referring hospital staff, and his partner, me.
Frankly, Jeff saved this child’s life, and, moreover, he did it in a truly impressive fashion. His performance and composure have inspired me to increase my continued efforts to be the type of clinician that Jeff is. Also worthy of note, Jeff established a special connection with this patient and his family. He, to this day, still maintains frequent dialogue and visits with the patient and his family. This was such a rewarding call for Jeff, and our program, as he has established a genuine friendship with this patient and family, which is a rare and very special thing in health care.
Aside from any specific patient encounters, Jeff brings a lot to the table and holds nothing back in terms of sharing knowledge and guidance. His career is quite diverse both clinically and regionally. He consistently lifts our teammates up through clinical and personal mentorship and asks nothing in return. He embodies compassion for others and is the definition of reliable.
In closing, I can’t speak highly enough about Jeff. He is a pillar of our program, a role model in every way, approaches health care and the challenges presented with zeal and enthusiasm, is a calm and empathetic person, and he represents everything a nurse should strive for. I’m proud to work with him and even more proud to call him my friend.
