We had an elderly man with severe heart failure on our unit and his biggest concern was not being able to get heart-healthy food at home. He was the caregiver for his wife, who has dementia. She had always cooked for the family and recently almost burned the house down. Since they had been eating a lot of take out - fast food. This exacerbated the patient’s heart failure, and he knew that if this was not solved, he would be in and out of the hospital – smart man! All of his family lived out of town. I thought of this nurse, who cooks and eats very healthy and good. I called her to ask if she would be willing to talk with the patient and work out something to bring by food 2-3 X/week. This nurse was willing to help this patient and his wife to get nutritious heart-healthy meals. This is above and beyond the expected duties of a nurse and shows her commitment to our patients.
