BSN, RN
Nomination #1
I would like to nominate Jena Shaw, a nurse on Cardiology, for the DAISY Award for the extraordinary compassion that she showed one of our patients during one of the most vulnerable moments of this patient's life.
Jena had cared for this patient all weekend. On Tuesday, when Jena returned to work, she was not assigned to care for this patient. So, Jena made multiple efforts throughout the day to stop and visit this patient, knowing that he had made the difficult decision to transition to comfort care earlier in the day.
Rather than allowing him to pass alone, Jena made the selfless decision to remain at his bedside, sitting with him, speaking to him, and offering comfort and dignity in his final moments.
Jena stayed until midnight that night, almost five hours after her shift. Family arrived, and this patient peacefully passed at 0120 am that morning.
Jena's presence provided peace and reassurance to a patient who could no longer advocate for himself. She treated him not just as a patient, but as a person who deserved compassion, respect, and human connection at the end of life.
This act of kindness went far beyond routine nursing care. It exemplifies the true spirit of nursing—advocacy, empathy, and unwavering dedication to patients and their families. Her actions left a lasting impact and are powerful reminders of how nurses make a difference not only through clinical skill, but through humanity and heart.
Nomination #2
I would like to nominate Jena Shaw, RN, for the DAISY Award.
Jena is a very Caring and Compassionate RN. I've worked with Jena for almost 4 years and admire the way she cares not just for her assigned patients but the way she cares for all the patients on the Cardiology Unit and for all Bronson patients.
Over the weekend, she cared for an assigned patient and interacted with him on a 1:1. He responded to her caring demeanor and became very comfortable interacting with Jena.
Jena was off the following day. When Jena returned to work, she was assigned to train a Nurse Extern. The patient she cared for over the past weekend had been reassigned to another nurse. During this shift, the patient asked his nurse to see Jena. In response to his request, Jena checked in with the patient as time permitted and noted his condition was deteriorating.
Since family was unavailable, Jena decided to stay with him until family arrived, as she didn't want the patient to pass alone.
Jena clocked out and stayed with the patient until his family arrived. The patient eventually passed at 0130 in the company of family.
This is but one example of the Caring and Compassionate Care Jena delivers every day and deserves the DAISY Award. I would be honored if Bronson would recognize Jena's conscientiousness.
