In the past 2 months, Jenee was presented with 2 very difficult discharge situations. The first was a patient who came to TCH for a specialized brain surgery from New Jersey. Although the surgery was successful, there were complications and the patient was required to stay for a month longer than expected. To complicate matters, the family had 6 other children in New Jersey and mom was pregnant with her 8th child and very near her delivery date. Once the patient was stable enough for transfer to a rehab facility in New Jersey, Jenee went into action working on a way to get her safely back home. Because of the severity of the surgery and complications, a medical team would need to accompany her back home. All of this was arranged and the patient made it back safely to New Jersey.
In an odd twist of fate, at the same time, Jenee then had a second patient who presented to TCH from Mississippi for a second opinion of her illness. After an extensive workup, it was determined that the patient needed a very specialized care center. The only such facility in the United States that could really provide the services that this patient needed was in Rhode Island. Due to the patient's condition, she would need an air ambulance transport to the facility and unfortunately, the patient's insurance company did not offer this benefit. The price tag to the family was $16,000-$74,000. Jenee again stepped in and made many phone calls to many different organizations, going above and beyond to try to find help for this family. All of those phone calls paid off when Jenee was able to find a foundation that would donate the time and had resources to help pay for part of the cost, making the flight affordable for the family. The patient was safely transported and is getting the treatment that she needs.
These are just a few examples of the work that Jenee has done but her attitude is what really makes the difference. She is always kind and respectful to both patients and the medical team. She thinks outside of the box and doesn't give up when faced with a challenging task. Jenee provides the kind, compassionate care that the DAISY Award is meant to recognize.
