Jenna worked with a patient who has struggled for years with substance abuse and bipolar disorder. This patient was very agitated as they were withdrawing from stimulants. The patient would spend much of the day threatening and swearing at staff and was extremely labile. Many nurses were burnt out working with her, but Jenna volunteered to work with this patient each shift. When working with her, she took the time to see through the patient's aggression, listen to her life story, and build a rapport. She was able to convince her to take medications that helped her improve her condition. Jenna then took the time to escort the patient to an activity room, where she could play the piano to help lower her level of agitation. She complimented the patient on their piano-playing ability and even made the patient laugh on several occasions. Through Jenna's rapport building, this patient's condition improved rapidly over the three days they worked together. Jenna took the time to see the good in someone who was presenting at their worst.
