I was in shock that it was finally happening. I was even more blown away that she was leading the delivery of this baby by herself while maintaining friendly conversation and encouraging us to listen to our favorite music.
My wife was in labor whenever our nurse came on her 7-7-day shift. We had just gotten through a long night of hard labor pains. I was half asleep whenever she came in to introduce herself. I woke up to my wife puking on the floor next to the bed and I felt terrible. Before I could process any more, the nurse was on the floor wiping it up while she continued talking with my wife like nothing had happened. The puke didn’t even phase her, and her attitude wasn’t affected in the slightest. She checked on us often throughout the day, not stressing and maintaining excellent communication with us, despite having another delivery to support while my wife was in labor. We felt comforted because it constantly felt like she was coordinating all the right treatment for my wife. Next thing we knew, our OB came in and told us we would start the epidural shortly and they would begin induction after that. Then the anesthesiologist came in and started the epidural. Around that time, she was at the other delivery. After she returned, my wife had dilated a lot more and we both felt much better than the night before. Soon after her return, she calmly mentioned that they were going to fix my wife’s blood pressure and then start pushing for the baby. We were surprised that it happened so quickly but relieved we were finally going to have our baby. The nurse started explaining everything, and I was extremely impressed by how capable and knowledgeable she was. She calmly started preparing the bed for delivery and led my wife through practice pushing and then actual pushing. I was in shock that it was finally happening. I was even more blown away that she was leading the delivery of this baby by herself while maintaining friendly conversation and encouraging us to listen to our favorite music. It is more than safe to say that she inspired confidence through her expertise. It was so much more relaxing than I imagined. I am sure she was a big reason why we felt so at peace with the delivery. Once the baby was ready, she called in the OB and the rest of the delivery team to complete the birth. After the birth, the staff took our baby to the nursery, and the delivery room emptied of everyone except us and our nurse again. She was such a comforting constant presence throughout the experience, it is hard to describe. While everybody unwound from birth, she charted and talked with us about any questions we had until she got off work for the day. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
