Today I had the opportunity to witness Jen speak with the son of an ICU patient who was on ECMO and not expected to survive. The son was here to be at his mother's son during the dying process.
I witnessed Jen offering compassionate education, preparing the son on what he would see when entering the patient's room, lines, and tubes that would be present and how the patient would not look like the mom that he knew.
Jen exhibited such a healing presence to this young man through slow, compassionate explanations, allowing time for the son to process the information and ask questions. Jen exemplified SCL's Service Behaviors and Values.
I was honored to witness her kind, gentle, and empathetic approach during such an extremely sensitive time in this young man's life. She demonstrated superhuman nursing today and deserves to be honored as an Extraordinary Nurse not only for her patients but to other families as well.
