She treated him with respect and kindness while maintaining his dignity.
Our son suffered a catastrophic head injury and was admitted to the BSW STICU. After surgery to remove his skull to help with swelling, my husband and I were allowed to see our son. The first night was very difficult and at shift change we were apprehensive about what was to come, but our concerns were quickly assuaged by an amazing nurse named Jenny. She treated our son as if he was awake and able to communicate with her even though he was in a coma and on life support. She treated him with respect and kindness while maintaining his dignity. She relayed to him everything she was doing to him and apologized if it seemed to make him uncomfortable. She showed him love, compassion, and a genuine commitment to his care which put us as his parents at ease. She also took the time to answer our questions no matter how busy she was.

Soon, we were told that our son would not recover. We made the difficult choice to remove the life support and donate his organs. Even though Jenny knew my son was not going to survive, she never stopped treating him like he was recovering. She maintained the same high level of care and compassion as if nothing had changed. When our Son conducted his hero walk, Jenny attended even though it was her day off. She made us feel like family. Words cannot adequately convey how awesome she was. I can only say that she is a phenomenal nurse who made our difficult journey more bearable. She is a prime example of what an exceptional nurse is.
