This nurse has made herself available more than not to assist in those “many nights” of limited human resources.
To meet Jennifer, she is a quiet, seemingly reserved soul. She doesn’t raise her voice, but she delivers information in a gentle yet informative way. Her ideals are sound, and she has a unique “out of the box” gift that is a must for good leadership in a busy thriving Emergency Department such as ours. But that’s not why I am nominating her…although to watch her, you would say “oh, yeah…I see”. Lately, the healthcare trend not just for us but for many facilities has been an increased usage of emergency care. Non-emergencies as well as critical things have increased causing demands on staff as well as leadership. Capacity for admits on inpatient areas has been limited so the use of “holding” positions has exploded in the last 2 months. Hospitals leading to Dallas are facing the same influx of needs. This nurse has made herself available more than not to assist in those “many nights” of limited human resources. Whether to take a whole shift as a bedside nurse or to come in for “just a few hours” and leave 8 hours later, she is active on the unit, moving patients, gathering pumps, supplies, and bedside toilets. She is active in getting transfers in and out and patients up to the units. She interacts with house as well as bed control in solid solutions. Her crews have come to know and feel the support and expertise she brings to the unit. She is one gifted leader with whom TMC has the joy of working. So, you see, it’s a celebration of the many things that outweigh the “only one thing” that this leader does.
