The Union West motto of “More than a hospital” goes beyond the commitment to the patients and depicts the commitment that staff has to each other. No one embodies this more than ER nurse Jennifer Braswell. On one occasion it was a particularly busy day in the department and required all hands on deck to keep up with the flow of patients. Right at shift change a pediatric resuscitation came into a patient room. Based on staffing it would have been easy for Jennifer to clock out and go home. However, this night had several travelers, and she recognized the need for a nurse who was familiar with supplies and protocols. Jennifer stayed over two hours after the end of shift to not only care for the pediatric patient but to also provide support and care to her teammates. She recognized the needs of the department and put aside her own wishes to provide that “more than a hospital” experience. This is just one example of many that show the amazing nurse that Jennifer is. From working hard to set up the rooms at Union West to get the department ready for opening day, to providing unmatched compassionate care to each patient, and always being a positive example to her teammates; Jennifer makes the Emergency Department more than a hospital and is more than a nurse!
