Jen is a great leader in the ED as a charge nurse. She is also an incredible nurse that provides quality, compassionate care to patients and their families. This past week, I witnessed Jen in action caring for a patient who came in with chest pain. When the triage nurse asked for her assistance with a patient she thought could be in distress, Jen was able to quickly assess that the patient was experiencing a potential cardiac emergency. She took the patient to a trauma bay and quickly got her connected to cardiac monitoring to confirm she was in SVT.
The doctor called the medical code to have additional assistance at the bedside. The young patient was visibly scared by how many providers came into the room and began to bustle around her, but Jen was such a calm and reassuring presence. She kept the patient talking, and even shared her own hospital experience with the patient to help them understand what was happening. Jen was even able to get the patient to laugh as she attempted vagal maneuvers and other means to help cardiovert.
Once the patient was successfully cardioverted, Jen continued to follow the patient to a regular room, making sure she felt comfortable and safe during her obs period. The patient clearly felt a connection with her, and would smile openly each time Jen entered the room. Her father also expressed his appreciation for Jen’s compassionate care during the stressful event. Jen’s work ethic and caring personality is incredible. She is an exemplary nurse!
Note: This is Jen's 2nd DAISY Award!
