In walks Jen Lee! She saw my right hand and said, “She is trying to talk to us”.
I am 59 years old. I never knew learning the ASL alphabet as a child was going to be so important until I was flown into your ER by helicopter. The ER room was full. I could hear several voices in the room, and I had my right hand going, spelling out “where am I”. Nobody was paying attention to my hand. I was intubated and unable to talk. The charge nurse thought I was under and unable to communicate. In walks Jen Lee! She saw my right hand and said, “She is trying to talk to us”. She was told she was wrong, that I was under and intubated, which I was not. Once the charge nurse realized that Jen was indeed correct, she stopped everything and went to find a doctor while Jen and I continued to speak through the ASL alphabet. Jen Lee did not need to know the ASL alphabet, but she did! Thanks to her, the impossible wasn’t! She was able to talk to me while I had a tube down my throat and was completely awake and coherent, which everyone else in the room thought I was not. I am not sure in the long run what Jen saved me from, but at that moment, she saved me from having that tube any longer than I needed to. I believe she went above and beyond to help me. I am grateful for what she did for me. I had come from Blackwell, OK, where there wasn’t anyone to understand me. I had been intubated a few times over the years, and I was trying to tell them I felt like I was drowning, but nobody understood ASL alphabet. Jen Lee was awesome, and I finally felt heard after not knowing what happened to me. The last thing I remember is that I was at home watching TV. I do not normally fill these out, but I deeply feel that Jen Lee needs to be recognized for this – something she didn’t have to do!
