Jen Maloney is a fierce advocate for patient well-being. She cares so deeply that she shares the pain and frustration her patients feel. She is always working to safeguard the patients she loves and works tirelessly for. With determination, she powers through and communicates her patients' needs to keep them stable. She’s exceptional at recognizing symptoms that need to be further investigated bringing them to the medical or surgical teams’ attention and protecting her patients.

Recently a patient was slowly having worsening respiratory distress. Jen ensured her symptoms were managed properly. When the patient bled in her nose after a traumatic nasogastric tube, she ensured her airway was patent. She eloquently communicated to Fellows and nursing supervisors that the prolonged bleeding was increasing the patient’s aspiration risk and she needed a higher level of care for her safety. Jen prevented further harm to the patient by stopping the attempts to place a bridle in the bleeding nose pointing out it was worsening the bleed and helped the doctor refocus on controlling the bleeding. The patient was able to remain stable and have a controlled transfer to the ICU instead of an emergent code. Jen followed up on the patient and was very concerned for her.

Jen has stated her colleagues and patients are like her family and it’s very evident in her dedication to the unit and patient care.
