From the beginning, she advocated fiercely for this patient, pushing for his acceptance into care when others hesitated due to his complex clinical presentation. Jennifer built a therapeutic relationship that was instrumental in his progress.
I am honored to nominate Jennifer Deiter and Olivia Koepp for the DAISY Award, recognizing their extraordinary dedication and compassionate care in managing the complex needs of a long-term behavioral health patient. Their commitment not only transformed the experience for this individual but also exemplified the essence of nursing, providing holistic care that encompasses physical, emotional, and psychological support.

From the outset, Olivia demonstrated exceptional care and compassion. She established a trusting relationship with the patient, who had faced significant challenges during his time of homelessness. Olivia’s efforts to encourage him to engage in basic self-care activities—such as drinking water, showering, brushing his teeth, changing clothes, and eating—were pivotal in his journey toward recovery. This patient had neglected these fundamental aspects of his life for years, and Olivia’s consistent support helped him reclaim his dignity and well-being.

Her communication skills were equally remarkable. Olivia kept the patient’s family informed and involved, even coordinating with the guardian who lived out of state. This connection was crucial in fostering a support system for the patient, making him feel valued and understood.

In preparation for the patient’s much-needed surgery, Olivia went above and beyond. She picked up an additional shift the day before the surgery to ensure that everything was in place, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to his care. On the day of the surgery, she was right there by his side, providing reassurance and managing his anxiety. Olivia even accompanied him to the operating room, advocating for him and ensuring that his needs were communicated effectively.

Jennifer Dieter’s contributions were equally invaluable. From the beginning, she advocated fiercely for this patient, pushing for his acceptance into care when others hesitated due to his complex clinical presentation. Jennifer built a therapeutic relationship that was instrumental in his progress. Initially, the patient struggled to engage with the world around him, often sleeping in the shower and refusing to leave his room. Jennifer’s persistence and dedication helped him gradually step out of his comfort zone. She worked tirelessly to encourage him to eat, ensuring that he received nourishment, and engaged him in activities to foster social interaction.

Moreover, Jennifer maintained open lines of communication with the patient’s family, advocating for his surgery and ensuring that his needs were met even when she faced her own health challenges. Her commitment to this patient’s well-being did not waver, and her efforts contributed significantly to his successful transition toward recovery.

Olivia Koepp and Jennifer Dieter embody the spirit of nursing through their compassion, advocacy, and unwavering support. Their dedication has not only improved the life of one patient but has also inspired their colleagues and elevated the standard of care in our facility. I wholeheartedly nominate them for the DAISY Award.

I would also like to extend recognition to the entire Behavioral Health team for the exceptional care they provided throughout this patient’s journey. Their collective efforts created an environment where healing could take place, showcasing the power of teamwork in nursing.
