I don't think my husband would be doing as well now if it had not been for Jennifer.
My husband was admitted to Ascension Borgess Hospital through the Emergency Room to the STICU after falling and breaking his neck Wednesday morning. We were all very afraid and unsure of what was going on or what was going to happen. The first nurses that cared for my husband were kind and caring and we were grateful for their help. On Thursday, June 8, my husband had surgery on his neck to stabilize his spine and to decompress his spinal cord. The neurosurgeon was very skilled and he spent time explaining everything well before the surgery, and we knew it was a very big deal. On Friday, Jennifer became his nurse for three days, until he was discharged. She was incredible and extraordinary, caring for my husband and me and our family with skill as a nurse, and compassion for us as people. She was actively involved in helping to identify the reason for my husband's low heart rate whenever he slept, and she advocated for specific care for him, getting the cardiology department involved. On Friday, my husband had a procedure to install a pacemaker. I was extremely concerned about him having another serious procedure when he was still recovering from the surgery the day before. He had also been having hallucinogenic episodes which she helped to identify as being a reaction to the narcotics he had been given. She advocated to have those medications stopped and replaced with non-narcotic options. She explained everything to us and she provided exceptional care for my husband, encouraging him by engaging him in sparring conversations. She was like an anchor for me and my family whenever we had to leave, because we knew she was taking care of him and we could trust her. I don't think my husband would be doing as well now if it had not been for Jennifer. It was hard to say goodbye to her when my husband was discharged. She went above and beyond to make sure we understood everything required for his care and she encouraged my husband and me by telling us he was going to be fine now. I even wondered if she was human, or if she was really an angel. We certainly consider her an angel of mercy who took outstanding care of us when we needed her. We will never forget her.
