Jennifer was assigned to a foreign PEC ED patient. He was working on an international ship when he attempted suicide. The patient spoke very little English and knew no one in the country. He would not eat and he was in the ED for days. Through internet research of the patient's nationality, religion, and culture, Jennifer was able to form a special connection with the patient. Jennifer realized that the patient was not being difficult or defiant as others had thought, but in fact he was following his cultural and religious standards. She identified his need for prayer multiple times per day and would not disturb him during prayer time. She identified the times he would eat and that he would only eat prepackaged foods and worked closely with dietary to ensure that he would have adequate nourishment. Jennifer also helped and educated other team members about the patient's background and lifestyle so they could care for the patient's needs. Jennifer worked consecutive days while the patient was in ED and she volunteered to be his Day shift nurse throughout his stay knowing that he needed her compassion and understanding regarding his way of life. Jennifer became an inspiration and an example to her fellow nurses those days. We all thank her for her continued commitment, compassion and for her patient care excellence.
