Jen was instrumental in assisting a patient who arrived on our unit with a complicated decision and situation. She was given misinformation regarding therapeutic surgical procedures our hospital provides for patients. The patient’s family was frustrated with the misguided information and language barrier that complicated the encounter. Jen used the language line to help calm the patient and family, used the information provided to call the proper clinic and the patient was able to schedule the procedure she desired. Jen could have told the patient on arrival that she was given inaccurate information and sent her home. Instead, she spent almost an hour on the phone with different healthcare facilities and the language line to assist in scheduling a procedure. She exhibited a great amount of compassion to a patient in a difficult situation.
