Several days into this patient's admission he revealed that he has thoughts of suicide. He has a history of suicidal thoughts, but nothing current upon admit. It was Jenny's 2nd consecutive day as this patient's RN, it was also his birthday, the big 30! He was down, depressed, had no visitors and Jenny could see that he needed something positive during this hospital stay. He was also discharging to inpatient psych later on that day. Jenny ordered him a birthday cake from the kitchen and gathered maybe a dozen staff members, including RT and physicians and other disciplines to come to sing happy birthday and celebrate with this patient. Jenny said she wanted to give the patient a reason to look forward to another year. He was very touched and was very appreciative. He also shared with Jenny that he's a good person, he just has had bad experiences and bad friends in his life. Both the patient and Jenny were teary-eyed.
