She had this Nurse with extraordinary character. I like to think of Jeri as an earth angel.
There was a patient who came in unconscious and soiled, elderly and approaching death. After stabilizing and fully assessing, this nurse made contact with the patient’s call list. Typical day! I was first on that call list. The nurse listened intently and recognized the situation of a woman who had no children or close relatives, except an estranged brother on the US west coast that couldn’t be reached for days, leaving me to give treatment consent. The dying woman was my Aunt. We were close, but not close in distance. I guess you could say that I am a keeper and she needed me. She was an ex-wife of my beloved, late uncle. My Aunt died alone, but not really. She had this Nurse with extraordinary character. I like to think of this nurse as an earth angel. One who takes the time to go beyond her call of duty and she does so on a daily basis. The situation of my aunt is more common than people outside the medical community may recognize, being located right there by Oaklawn. The compassion and communications through and through this nurse values. Her desire to assist in every way possible is effective, efficient, and with eagerness. It is people like this nurse that make an institution rise above others and gain top recognition. She’s amazing!
