I am a Charge nurse in a very busy Pediatric ED. We started the shift short one nurse, and at 0800 we received a call-in for a Trauma Red 1-year-old MVC traumatic arrest.

The two nurses on the floor responded to the call along with the provider. Because of the time of day, the unit was without a secretary, CNA, and medic. I was left to cover the unit while the trauma team evaluated the patient in the resuscitation room.

Jerry walks in the door with his usual pleasant attitude like an angel sent at the perfect time to help us. It was his day off, so as expected, he was in regular clothing and was dropping off his yearly health form. As he says hello, we hear over the intercom that two additional pediatric trauma yellows are coming in from the same MVC.

Without hesitation, he looks at me and sees the desperation in my eyes and says, “Give me a minute to clock in and change into scrubs.”

Jerry stayed and worked for several hours to help the Pediatric ED stabilize the traumas and help with the additional sick children, including a neonate with a fever. This jump to action from Jerry is his normal behavior; he always goes above and beyond to help over and over again.

Thank you, Jerry, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
