Annie went way above and beyond as an excellent nurse and extraordinary patient advocate. Her keen assessment skills and eye for a developing problem, along with her persistent advocacy, saved her patient's life. She was able to sense that there was something extremely wrong occurring with her patient. She advocated multiple times to the same doctor regarding her concerns about her patient’s increased pain, increased incision swelling/drainage with discoloration, increased difficulty breathing, and just overall concern for the wellbeing of her patient. When the doctor refused to budge on taking things seriously and making appropriate orders, she continued to voice her concerns and even continued up the chain of command to another doctor. Amid the chaos, the first doctor was very rude and condescending to her, but she was able to remain calm, professional, and assertive enough to get the ball rolling. Her persistent advocacy and professionalism led to the discovery of an arterial bleed causing a large hematoma. The patient was able to be taken to the OR in time to evacuate and control the bleeding, thus essentially saving the patient’s life. She truly exemplifies the vision of ICARE and “stopping the line.” She has a heart of gold, cares deeply about her patients, and is very deserving of not only the DAISY Award but the respect and admiration of those around her.
