Within the first 2 minutes of her being in the room, she noticed the noise our son was making as he was breathing.
Our twins (a boy and a girl) were born at Virginia Baptist Hospital. Everything went smoothly with the delivery. Once I was moved over to the Mother and Baby Unit, we met our nurse Jessi Paterson. Within the first 2 minutes of her being in the room, she noticed the noise our son was making as he was breathing. She asked how long he had been doing this and we told her ever since I was in the Recovery room. She immediately asked if she could take him to the nursery to get checked out and we told her she could. She returned stating they were checking him out and someone will come in and let us know how he is doing. To make a long story short. Our son ended up having a collapsed lung. He had to have a chest tube inserted and eventually had to be intubated and transferred to UVA. He was a very sick baby. Our son was at UVA for 2 weeks. He fully recovered, and we took him back for his 6 month NICU follow up appointment in April, and he was released from UVA. If it was not for her quick response our son may have not survived. We are forever grateful for her. She took such wonderful care of our daughter and myself while I was there. We feel Jessi went above and beyond, and she deserves this award and so much more.
