My son, M, was born extremely premature at just 23 weeks. At 3 weeks of age, he developed Hydrocephalus as a complication due to interventricular brain bleeds, and he was transferred to Broward Health Medical Center. We didn't know at the time, but my son ended up being hospitalized for 9 months, having multiple surgeries, diagnoses and complications. I truly got to know many of the NICU nurses, doctors and staff. They are all wonderful, but Jessica was exceptional with M. She has become like family, and I will never be able to repay her for saving my son's life on multiple occasions. A couple of weeks after M was transferred to BHMC, Jessica was his nurse that shift and had been several times beforehand. She was concerned with his lethargic behavior. He was less active than normal. It didn't seem that different to me, but she voiced her concern to the doctors on rounds and advocated to have blood work and cultures done to check him out. It turns out that his blood, urine and lukei cultures all came back positive for Staph. If it weren't for Jessica advocating on M's behalf, he may not have gotten antibiotics as quickly as he did. He was so fragile at that point and an infection could have been very serious if not caught early. After that day, I asked Jessica to be M's Primary Nurse, one of the best decisions I ever made. If I ever had questions about a procedure or diagnosis, she was very thorough in her explanations and/or would have the doctors/surgeons come talk to me. I was completely at ease if Jessica was caring for M on any day if I couldn't be there. I know she truly cared for M as if he was her own. One of the doctors, jokingly called her M's Second Mom.
