I would like to nominate one of our ICU NPs, Jessica Blakely. Jessie exemplifies the true nature of what a nurse leader is and demonstrates INOVA values on a consistent basis. She models extraordinary behavior and fosters an environment of trust, compassion, and respect while upholding ethical principles. She goes above and beyond for her patients and families to provide compassionate, empathetic care. An example of this took place recently-Jessie was caring for a dying patient in the ED in which his wife was physically unable to be present. On top of her responsibilities as a nurse practitioner, Jessie took the extra time to stay with the patient and hold a phone to his ear so the last thing he heard before he passed was his wife's voice. Days later when this patient's wife called the hospital asking for her husband (and was found to have some cognitive issues/memory impairment), Jessie took the time to re-orient the wife as well as facilitate a wellness check while adhering to ethical principles of privacy, beneficence, and empathy. I am honored to work with such an honest and compassionate provider-INOVA is lucky to employ a leader such as Jessie. Her caring dedication to her staff, patients, and families does not go unnoticed.
