Jessica stands out for everything she does for the VA and the Veterans.
I think the biggest influence on my decision to nominate Jessica Corbett RN for the DAISY Award is her overall willingness as a nurse to do anything and everything that is in her power to help others, including both patients and co-workers. Her job title might be CLC Nurse Case Manager, however, she really is a jack-of-all-trades.
Over the course of this COVID-19 pandemic, Jessica has not only functioned in her usual role, but she has also taken on additional tasks voluntarily to include working in the ER and signing up to administer COVID-19 vaccines when the project was first initialized last year and assisting with COVID-19 pre-procedural swabbing. She always puts others’ needs in front of her own.
On any given day, Jessica can be relied upon to cover in a pinch. Not only does she agree to do this, but she does this with an optimistic smile on her face despite any prior plans she may have had otherwise. One example of this is recently the inpatient unit was short on case management and Jessica was asked to fill in with little notice as well as continue with her current position. She did this without hesitation and was able to establish a rapport with the SW on the inpatient units to determine the home health needs of the patients being discharged so that she could send them home successfully and safely. She then was asked to cover and set up outpatient hospice services for a Veteran due to outpatient hospice staffing challenges. Clearly, she must have been overwhelmed but she remained calm and continued with determination on her face. When asked if she needed some assistance, she would just smile and say that she has everything under control.
Another example of extraordinary care is to keep patients from having to go all the way over to get their COVID vaccines, she would bring the vaccines to them, making it much easier on the patients as well as the nursing staff taking care of those patients. With that being said, there is not one particular instance that stands out, but it is how she stands out for everything she does for the VA and the Veterans. Florence Nightingale’s goal of nursing was ‘to put the patient in the best condition for nature to act upon him’. I feel that Jessica Corbett is always trying to do this for every single patient.
