I am a Duke surgery resident physician, and my wife is a final year medical student who was interviewing for residency. While in labor in the hospital, my wife had a residency interview. Two very stressful things to combine. All the nurses were great, but Jessica was exceptional in going above and beyond to not only facilitate my wife’s ability to interview while in labor at the hospital, but she also made the entire delivery experience a very pleasant and memorable one for all of us. She even sang our favorite song with us. We want to recognize her for all she did. As a black man who is knowledgeable of the lesser outcomes of minoritized groups such as mine, especially when it comes to childbirth, my greatest fear was for my wife to have an unpleasant experience or a complication. Jessica made us feel at peace and was super encouraging the whole way. She was kind, attentive, compassionate, and thoughtful, and she treated us like family. If I can give her a greater honor, I will. Just let me know how.
