July 2026 Honoree
Jessica Eschenbacher, RN
I became ill with a very aggressive non-Hodgkin DLBCL in the heart of COVID. My husband couldn't even be with me for treatments. This was a very terrifying time in my life, not knowing if I was going to live or die. Not having anyone with me for support was grueling, but I was blessed with Jessica Eschenbacher on my first day of treatment.
I will never forget her beautiful smile, amazing upbeat attitude & compassion that ran for miles. She took her job very seriously, and I felt like I was her only patient. She put my mind at ease and gave me comfort that day and even managed to make me laugh through some extremely hard days.
I felt blessed to have her as my nurse that first day, and I hoped and prayed that I would get her for every other treatment. If she wasn't assigned to me, she always made sure to stop by and visit me, which always brightened very dark days.
Unfortunately, Jess was not assigned to me on my last treatment day, a huge day....bell ringing, celebration, etc! I had seen other patients complete their chemotherapy, and they were greeted with a group of nurses clapping and cheering, handing them ribbons and papers showing their huge accomplishment of surviving chemo/cancer. I anticipated this celebration, and to my huge disappointment, the nurse assigned to me that day simply came in, unplugged me from the machine, and said that I was done and that I could go home.
I seriously wanted to cry. It was bad enough that my whole family couldn't be there that day to celebrate my victory with me due to COVID, but I was hoping for the cheering of the nurses.
As I stepped out into the hall from my chemo pod all alone, I saw Jessica Eshenbacher on the phone. I tapped her shoulder, blew her a kiss, and mouthed to her "THANK YOU" (quietly so as not to disturb her call) She took one look at me, recognized that it was my last treatment, told the person on the other line that she would call them back, and she DANCED ME ALL THE WAY DOWN THE HALL, THROUGH THE LOBBY AND STRAIGHT TO THE BELL!!!!
My heart was so happy. Once again, Jessica took a very sad situation where I felt totally alone and upset and turned it into yet again a very memorable occasion for me.
This was almost 6 years ago, and I still cry as I write this because I am still so filled with emotion & gratitude for one person's true compassion and love. I thank God for Jessica and her care throughout my treatment. Days with Jessica as my nurse were always so much easier to bear.
She truly is an angel here on earth. She was my saving grace through a horrible time of my life.
JESSICA ESCHENBACHER IS THE BOMB!
