Jessica was the 3C day-shift nurse. During our shift, a terminal patient was accepted into hospice and was being discharged home. The patient was here alone because her family members worked and were not able to be here at her bedside.
Once her discharge was complete, and arrangements for transfer home via ambulance, the patient called out crying. Her family would be unable to come to the hospital prior to her discharge, so her prescriptions would not be filled until the next day. The patient did not have any cash/cards/checks with her either. Knowing this terminal hospice patient needed "peace of mind" before she was discharged home, Jessica went downstairs to our retail pharmacy, filled the prescriptions, and paid $48 out of her own pocket. Jessica brought the medications to the patient, told her not to worry, and sent her home via EMS.
