We were notified by UVA that a patient was referred to UVA for a liver transplant. Insurance was not willing to cover this because it was not an of COE. It turns out this patient was a 3-month-old baby with a parent who is a Bon Secours employee. The family was not readily able to travel or absorb large out of pocket expenses.
Jessica Flannagan worked tirelessly with the UVA team and our benefits leaders at the Health System Office to get Aetna to cover services at UVA for this baby. Many of these communications occurred over the holidays, and Jessica was always very responsive and helpful. Per the forwarded message, the child was able to visit UVA for an evaluation and these services were covered by Aetna.
